Permit For Tibet

To get a permit you should submit the following documents and mention the following information to us.Full name | Gender | Date of birth | Passport number | Nationality

You need to apply for the travel permit at least 10 days prior to your entry date.

All kinds of people can get Tibet permit through a travel agency except diplomats, journalists, and senior government officials who should travel to Tibet under the arrangement by the Foreign Affairs Office of Tibet Government.

Other documents

Other documents are the same as you travel to other places of China – you need hold a valid passport with valid visa (issued by Chinese Embassy). If you are coming to Lhasa from Kathmandu, you’d better get China visa from Kathmandu because no matter you’ve already got the visa in your country or not, you must get a visa in Kathmandu, which is regulated in an official memo between China and Nepal.

Acute Mountain Sickness(AMS) is common at high altitudes, and depends on the elevation, the rate of ascent and individual susceptibility. Most visitors to Tibet will suffer from at least some symptoms that will generally disappear through acclimatization in several hours to several days.

Symptoms tend to be worse at night and include headache, dizziness, lethargy, loss of appetite, nausea, breathlessness and irritability. Difficulty sleeping is another common symptom, and many travelers have trouble sleeping for the first few days after arriving in Lhasa.

To prevent acute mountain sickness:

  • Drink extra fluids. The mountain air is dry and cold and moisture is lost as you breathe. Evaporation of sweat may occur unnoticed and result in dehydration.
  • Eat light, high-carbohydrate meals for more energy.
  • Avoid alcohol as it may increase the risk of dehydration, and don’t smoke.
  • Avoid sedatives.
  • Don’t push yourself when climbing up to passes, rather take plenty of breaks.
  • Avoid catching cold before you entering Tibet.

Clothing
The temperature during daytime is around 10-25 C in Lhasa, while at night it may reach 0C. When visit the lake or mountain, down-jacket is needed.
Try to dress in black or other heavy color clothes since the road out of Lhasa may be very dusty and dirty.

Jacket: a fiber-pile jacket is ideal for evening.
Sweater: Wool or wool mix with a high neck for extra warmth.
Headwear: wool or fabric-pile ski-style cap or balaclava for warmth. A lightweight brimmed hat is good for sun protection .Inexpensive broad brimmed straw and elk hats are sold in Tibet’s city markets.
Cotton underwear: four or five pairs.
Socks: at least three pairs.
Shirts: A long-sleeve shirt made of wool, flannel, or chamois, or a track-suit top. A long-sleeve stay-press cotton shirt for warmer temperature. Bring two or three T-shirts as well.
Pants: For men, one pair of loose-fitting wool pants, wool knickers, or fiber-pile pants, and one pair of light-weight cotton pants. Women should wear a midcaf dress or skirt, though pants and knee-length knickers with socks are also acceptable. Shorts are not appropriate at any time in Tibet for men or women.
Snack foods: Nuts, chocolate bars, granola bars, dried fruit, hard candies, beef jerky, and flavored drink mixes are much-appreciated trail treats.

Weather & Climate
In fact, the Tibetan climate is not as harsh as many people imagine it to be. It is suitable for travel to Tibet from April to the beginning of November, and the best time is August and September. But if you only stay in Lhasa, you can go there anytime of the year.Sun radiation is extremely strong in Tibet. The sunlight in Lhasa is so intense that the city is called Sunlight City. The thin air can neither block off nor retain heat so that the temperature extremes can be met in daytime and the same night respectively in Tibet. However it is not impossible to visit the holy snow land. May, June and September are the tourism season in east Tibet.

Most annual rainfall comes in the rainy season that starts from June to September. Usually it rains at night in Lhasa, Shigatse and Chamdo area. The rainfall may block roads and make travel difficult but the scenery at the time will be the best.

Summers mean cool nights and warm days.It can rain for days at a time in July and August,and frost in September is common.Strong winds and sand storms are not unusual,nor is snow on the passes.At higher elevations,freezing temperatures can occur any time of the year.During September at 17,000 feet(5180m),the nights are usually in the low teens to single figures.In January nighttime temperatures can drop to -33℃.(-27℃)and daytime temperatures often hover just below freezing. Tibet has a distinct rainy season and dry season, with the rainfall being very unbalanced. In spring and winter it tends to be dry and windy.
During the rainy season, which runs from June to September, the rainfall reaches 90 percent of all annual precipitation. In southern and central Tibet, it always rains heavily at night, while in northern Tibet, thunder and hailstorms frequently occur. During this season, the heavy rainfall can often brings about serious traffic problems, with roads becoming blocked due to frequent landslides.

Northern Tibet has an altitude of over 4,500 meters (14,764 feet) and its winter lasts from October through to May or even June, and is both dry and bitterly cold with an average temperature below zero. The best time to visit this region is during July and August, when visitors can enjoy fresh air, warm temperature, vast green grassland, as well as the snow-capped peaks.

Valleys and vast forest, with a humid subtropical monsoon climate, primarily occupy the southeast of Tibet. This place is a favorable summer resort due to its pleasant climate and exquisite scenery. The best time to visit this area is between May and October, when visitors can best enjoy its virgin forest, monumental canyons, holy mountains and lakes, local festive events as well as the fragrant flowers and fruits found in this region.

Central Tibet is also a good summer resort, with the best tourism season between June and September. This region is a holy land with many great Buddhist monasteries. The geothermal springs here are well renowned for their remedial abilities to cure many skin diseases. This area is also a heaven for shutterbugs during this period because of its clear air and blue sky.

The southernmost area of Tibet, with its lowest temperature being minus 34 degrees C (minus 29 degrees F), is the site where the hotspot of mountaineering exploration in the Himalayas is located. It is a must for mountain climbing enthusiasts in spite of the harsh condition.

Lastly, remember that the intense ultraviolet radiation is a big challenge to traveling in Tibet. Visitors had better be well prepared with sunglasses, hat and sun-blocking cosmetics. In addition, it is a good choice to take some medicine for many visitors will feel sick due to high altitude and insufficient oxygen.

Here is some more specific information in different areas:
Lhasa /Shigatse /Lhatse /Tingri /Nyalan: Along the Friendship highway is basically in good conditions year around. But from December to February, the thawed road could make some trouble. Try to avoid August – landslide could happen in the rainy season.
